about

SCIATICA is the solo creation of Charlottesville, Virginia’s multi-instrumentalist Cullen Wade (ex-Beldam). In summer 2019, during a debilitating bout of sciatica, the chronic pain condition of the lower back, Wade began channeling his anguish into extreme metal music. “When you can barely walk for a month, average four hours of sleep a week, and pain pills are useless,” he says, “your mind goes to some pretty dark places.” As in Wade’s previous band, Beldam, the music took the form of doom/sludge metal in the punishing tradition of Eyehategod, Weedeater, and Brainoil, but with a punk rock attitude toward song lengths. Challenging the subgenre’s tendency toward long-winded bloat, Wade prohibited himself from making songs longer than four minutes. The watchword was, “Don’t play any riff more than four times. If it’s really good, maybe play it five times.” The result is a set of short, sharp songs that get in, get out, and make an impression, with intense surreal lyrics addressing chronic pain in all its forms, from physical agony to the long-term dehumanization of life under out-of-control capitalism. Wade christened the project SCIATICA, after the pain condition that inspired its creation.

Though he is a thorough metalhead, the musically versatile Wade is more active in the hiphop world, where under the stage name Fellowman, he performs and records both as a solo rap artist and as a member of the hiphop duo Sons of Ichibei. One of the cornerstones of the central Virginia hiphop scene, Wade is the co-founder and director of Charlottesville’s annual Nine Pillars Hiphop Cultural Festival and the bi-monthly Rugged Arts Hiphop Showcase. His experience in hiphop manifests in the poetic imagery, leftist politics, and keen sense of social justice he brings to the lyrics of SCIATICA.

“It will feel right at home for those who like music that just screams emotional catharsis with an ugly sound.”
